DNA and Genetic GenealogyWhen an engagement involves DNA, ALERCE analyzes information produced, processed, matched, estimated, or hosted by independent laboratories and platforms.ALERCE is not a genetic-testing laboratory and does not control sample collection, laboratory processing, platform algorithms, reference populations, matching thresholds, user-submitted family trees, database composition, account availability, or later changes made by a provider.DNA matches, relationship predictions, ethnicity estimates, communities, ancestral regions, and automated tools are estimates. They may change as laboratories or platforms update their systems, add or remove users, revise reference data, or alter their policies.ALERCE does not provide medical or clinical genetic testing, genetic counseling, forensic laboratory analysis, chain-of-custody testing, legal paternity testing, or a legally binding determination of biological relationship. Genealogical DNA analysis does not replace a legally admissible relationship test or a clinical genetic evaluation.A person providing DNA information, raw data, account access, or results concerning another individual represents that the necessary authority or permission has been obtained. ALERCE may require direct authorization from the test taker or account holder and may decline or discontinue access when authorization is unclear.

7. Unexpected Findings and Living Persons
Documentary and genetic research may reveal unexpected or sensitive information, including adoption, donor conception, misattributed parentage, previously unknown relatives, biological relationships that differ from documented relationships, disputed identities, or other personal or family circumstances.ALERCE cannot predict the personal, familial, emotional, reputational, or legal effect of such findings or how another person may respond.ALERCE will contact DNA matches, relatives, possible heirs, witnesses, owners, or other living persons only when such contact is within the agreed scope and appropriately authorized.ALERCE cannot guarantee that a person contacted will respond, cooperate, provide accurate information, consent to testing, preserve confidentiality, or react positively. Statements made by living persons are evidence to be evaluated and are not automatically treated as independently verified facts.8. Legal, Heir, Citizenship, and Provenance MattersGenealogical evidence may assist attorneys, fiduciaries, trustees, executors, courts, institutions, and public authorities, but an ALERCE conclusion does not by itself constitute a legal determination that a person is an heir, beneficiary, next of kin, lawful owner, citizen, or otherwise entitled to a legal or administrative status or benefit.Those determinations are made by the applicable court, authority, fiduciary, governing instrument, or qualified legal professional.Provenance research examines the available documentary history of an artwork, object, manuscript, collection, or other cultural property. Unless expressly agreed, it does not constitute artistic or scientific authentication, attribution, appraisal, valuation, title insurance, a determination of lawful ownership, or a legal opinion concerning title, export, import, restitution, sanctions, or cultural-property law.A gap in provenance does not by itself establish unlawful ownership or defective title. Transcriptions, Translations, and Document InterpretationTranscriptions, translations, abstracts, and interpretations reflect ALERCE’s best professional reading of the material available.Handwriting, deterioration, poor reproduction, historical language, abbreviations, unfamiliar names, incomplete images, or ambiguous wording may prevent a definitive interpretation. ALERCE may identify uncertainty through brackets, alternative readings, explanatory notes, or similar conventions.Unless expressly stated otherwise, a translation or transcription is prepared for research and evidentiary purposes. It is not necessarily a certified, sworn, notarized, or court-approved translation and may not satisfy the requirements of a court, consulate, registry, immigration authority, or other institution.10. Institutions, Collaborators, Costs, and ShippingALERCE may work with archives, public agencies, religious institutions, laboratories, platforms, record agents, local researchers, translators, photographers, couriers, and other external providers.ALERCE does not control their response times, fees, access rules, search methods, staffing, technical systems, record descriptions, processing delays, or decisions. ALERCE may prepare, submit, or coordinate a request but cannot guarantee that an institution will locate a record, accept an application, grant access, issue a document, meet an estimated timeframe, correct an error, or reach a favorable decision.When collaborators are used, ALERCE exercises reasonable care in selecting, instructing, coordinating, and evaluating work incorporated into its analysis.Third-party fees and expenses are not included in ALERCE’s professional fees unless expressly stated in writing. These may include certificates, reproductions, archive fees, DNA tests, subscriptions, translations, apostilles, legalizations, postage, courier services, travel, and local research.Clients should not send irreplaceable originals unless ALERCE has agreed to receive them. ALERCE will use reasonable care while physical materials are in its possession but does not control loss, damage, delay, customs detention, or misdelivery while an item is held by a postal service, courier, authority, repository, or other external custodian.11. Reports, Use, and Intellectual PropertyALERCE prepares reports and deliverables for the client, purpose, questions, and circumstances identified in the engagement. Reports should be read as a whole and together with their citations, qualifications, conflicting evidence, and stated limitations.ALERCE is not responsible for altered reports, incomplete or misleading excerpts, unauthorized publication, third-party summaries or translations, or reliance on the work for a materially different purpose.A third party requiring formal reliance on an ALERCE report should obtain ALERCE’s written authorization and determine whether the work requires updating or additional verification.ALERCE’s original reports, analysis, narrative text, research plans, charts, and compilations may be protected by copyright. Records, photographs, publications, database content, artwork, and other third-party materials remain subject to the ownership, copyright, licensing, citation, access, and publication restrictions of their respective owners or custodians. Delivery of a copy does not necessarily grant a right to publish or commercially reuse it.

12. Completion of Engagement and Professional BoundariesALERCE’s reports, hypotheses, and conclusions reflect the evidence reasonably available and examined as of the date of the work. New records, additional DNA results, corrected information, platform changes, or later discoveries may justify revising an earlier conclusion.Unless the applicable engagement agreement expressly provides otherwise, ALERCE’s services conclude upon delivery of the final agreed report and other deliverables.
